Networking Reception

Over 60 members and guests took advantage of our unique Networking Event at City Furniture in Tamarac, FL on Friday evening, September 8, 2006.  Nine City Furniture employees attended including the Manager of College Relations, who was our host.  City Furniture was not just a great host to the South Florida Chapter and its guests, with great refreshments in a friendly setting.  For the first time, City Furniture hosted the NBMBAA South Florida Chapter while the store was open and provided everyone an opportunity to participate in a special sale during City Furniture that night.  A very special member benefit indeed!

Our President, Sam Hines, thanked everyone for a great turnout and shared with the group our upcoming calendar of plans and events.  Sam also invited the guests to get more involved with the Chapter.  The strength of the Chapter is its membership.  That is how we execute our Leaders of Tomorrow, Scholarship, Symposium Cruise and Leadership Development programs.

All attendees were eligible to participate in two raffles for $100 Gift Certificates good at any City Furniture Store.  The winners were Latrista Funches and Dora Shade.  Be sure to plan on attending our next Networking Event!

July 2006 Newsletter

The most recent new membership-focused networking event of the South Florida Chapter of the National Black MBA Association held Friday July 28 at the Park Sports Club in Paradise in the Hard Rock complex, where a rousing good time was in order.  The function held in an upstairs private area overlooking the main arena-style restaurant area.  The first 25 arrivals got a free drink ticket and the live band performance downstairs just added to the energy level.

Each attendee was met at the door by Lisa Hall, Membership Chair, and Alison Quick, Director of Leaders of Tomorrow, who helped with sign-in, getting a nametag, providing membership applications and the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets.  This evening there was a special $5 raffle for an iPod or and the grand prize of a ticket for next year’s Leadership Symposium cruise.   In addition, there was a $25 national raffle ticket for a Mercedes Benz E320 car!

Over 40 people attended providing a good mix of members and guests.  The chapter provided Hors D’Oeuvres.  Once the mingling and networking had really gotten started, it was time to draw the raffle winners.    One of our guests won the iPod.  Ashlyn Williams of Miami, FL who was attending as a guest won the passage on the cruise.   There is still plenty of time to win the Mercedes since that drawing does not take place until our National Conference in Atlanta in October 2006.

During our Networking Reception on July 14, 2006 at TYCO, the South Florida Chapter awarded their scholarship winners.

The South Florida Chapter’s networking event at Tyco was great.  As usual, TYCO had lots of food.  It was a nice mix of NBMBAA, NSHMBA, Tyco, and interns.  Pat Williams introduced one scholarship winner and read bios on the other two.  The winner that attended is a fantastic young man who is just graduating from high school with an International Baccalaureate diploma in Spanish.  He is also studying Japanese and has hopes to study Hindi.

The Scholarship Committee is an integral part of the chapter, which, along with Leaders of Tomorrow, is consistent with our objective of building intellectual and economic capital in South Florida.   Scholarships are a major reason that we raise funds.

Since 1992, the South Florida chapter of NBMBAA has distributed over $60,000 in scholarships.  We do this through the awarding of at least one $1,000 undergraduate and one $1,500 graduate scholarship.  Each is for a legal Florida resident minority who is a student in business administration.  This year we saw a very significant increase in the number of applicants.

First, let me introduce the winners of the $1,000 undergraduate scholarships.  This year, through the strength of our fundraising efforts, we will award two undergraduate scholarships.  The first winner is Clifford Counts, who was not able to joint us.

Clifford Counts is a native of Oviedo, FL.  Active in church and school he graduated from Oviedo High School in 2004.  He is currently a junior at Florida State University were he is majoring in Business and Human Resource management.  He is a member of the Iota Delta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., serving as chapter Chaplin.  He also serves the students of FSU as a Student Senator, and as the finance chair.  This summer he is interning with the Seminole County Government in the Human Resource department.  Currently ranked in the top 7% of his class he looks forward to graduating Cum Laude from FSU and then continuing his education in law school in pursuit of a Juris Docturate degree.  His career goal is to use combing business and the field of law, through corporate law litigation.   Clifford sends his thanks to the chapter.

Dean Johnson graduated from Deerfield Beach High School and received an International Baccalaureate Diploma.  He lives in a single-parent home with his mother and his five-year-old sister.  He will be the first person in the family to attend a four-year university.  Dean will be attending the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania this fall, and plans to major in Multinational Management and pursue a dual degree in anthropology.  One of his greatest interests is foreign language and culture.  He has been taking Spanish language courses for six years and Japanese language courses for three years.  He plans on continuing his studies of Japanese and beginning Hindi language courses as well.  He also wants to study abroad in either Japan or India in the future.  After completing the undergraduate degree, he intends to go to graduate school and pursue an MBA.

This year we will award one $1,500 graduate scholarship

Tara Case is our graduate scholarship winner.  Tara is originally from Mandeville, Jamaica where she attended high school and graduated from the University of Miami with a Bachelors in Accounting.  She began her post collegiate career as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force.  During six years in the Air Force Tara worked in various fields such as Weapon Systems Analysis, Financial Services, and Program Management.  Tara is also an Operation Iraqi Freedom war veteran.  In her free time, Tara enjoys spending time with her family and friends, rooting for the Miami Hurricanes, traveling, volunteering, and creative writing.  Tara Case is our Jacki Tuckfield Scholar recipient of at $1,500 MBA scholarship.  Jacki Tuckfield was a member of our chapter who passed away at age 26.   Our MBA scholarship is named in her honor.  Tara is a fitting recipient of the graduate scholarship this year.  As Tara is on an internship this summer, she has asked her sisters Tanya and Tricia Case to represent her as we acknowledge her accomplishment.

June 2006 Newsletter

The June Networking Reception for the South Florida Chapter was a well-attended success.  We had 50 members, guests, and SunTrust executives in attendance.  We were greeted by our SunTrust host and introduced to several other SunTrust executives and associates.  Several attendees learned of recruitment opportunities at SunTrust.  Prospective members received membership applications and learned enough about the South Florida NBMBAA Chapter that they were ready to join our standing committees.

This Broward County event was the second hosted this year by SunTrust.  The first event was hosted in January at the Miami-Dade headquarters of SunTrust.  After the event some of the group enjoyed the night life activities on Las Olas Blvd. in Ft. Lauderdale.

At the end of the evening our Membership Committee Chair, Lisa Hall, announced a membership reception would take place on July 28, 2006 at the Hard Rock Hotel in Hollywood.  Also, there will be a Networking Reception on July 14, 2006 at 6:00 pm.

May 2006 Newsletter

We had multiple events and many out of town MBAs and their guests to come to South Florida in May.  The Multi-Regional group of Chapter Presidents, for the fourth year in a row hosted their Symposium and Cruise.  Three of the four Symposium Cruises have departed from Miami.  This always makes it easy for the South Florida Chapter to meet with the Symposium guests.  The Chapter encouraged everyone to attend the Symposium and invited local friends and partners to the pre-Symposium activities.

Prior to the 5 days 4 nights Symposium Cruise, the Multi-Regional MBA group hosted a Spirit Tasting reception at the Shelborne Hotel and Beach Resort on Miami Beach.  Brown-Forman located in Louisville, KY was the event sponsor.

130 MBAs and guests enjoyed three events one night at one location.  We started with a Networking Reception around the Pool.  We exchanged business cards.  Many of our partners and the South Florida groups (i.e. National Black Journalist, LINKS, Bankers,) attended.

Then we went inside the Grand Ballroom to enjoy the Spirit Tasting of the Brown-Forman brands.  Our Chapter President Sam Hines had a front row seat during the Spirit Tasting.  The presenter used Sam many times to highlight some of the unique qualities of their Spirits

Then we had live entertainment by Leesa Richards (www.LeesaRichards.com) and her band.  It was a great Bon Voyage party.  Go online to www.mbaChapterEvents.com for pictures and more information about the Symposium and Cruise.

April 2006 Newsletter

The South Florida Chapter’s April event was a Networking and Recruitment Reception at the Miami Herald.  The Herald is a Knight-Ridder newspaper company.  The Herald made the group feel extremely welcomed in many ways.  They asked everyone to bring a resume.  This showed their seriousness in employment for our members and guests.  They had some of their top executives at the meeting to meet and greet everyone.  The Chapter looks forward to more Networking Receptions with The Herald.

The South Florida Chapter conducted its annual Membership Strategic Planning Retreat at DeVry University.  The half-day meeting allowed our members and potential members to really get invested in planning the Chapter’s programs and projects for the next 24 months.

The meeting started with Sam Hines, Chapter President giving an overview of the Chapter’s vision, mission, and current strategies as well as a SWOT analysis.  Each Program Director gave a brief summary of their Key Challenges and Strategies.  Then the group separated into teams to work on key strategic and tactical activities for the top five activities of the chapter, which will shape our future.  Each group submitted a copy of their plans to the Executive Committee.  The program Directors have already started working on the plans created.

The participants were very energetic and it was great to have input from members – both seasoned and new.  This will keep the organization fresh and responsive.  DeVry’s college-based atmosphere also helped made the sessions very productive.  The group met in the student common area where both breakfast and lunch were served.

For the eighth year, the South Florida Chapter participated in the Jacki Tuckfield Memorial Graduate Business Scholarship Fund. Jacki Tuckfield was an active Chapter member who lost her life after 25 years.

In 1997, the Chapter named one of its six scholarships in Jacki’s honor. Jacki’s parents were so touched by the Chapter’s actions, that they started a scholarship program in Jacki’s name. The program has awarded $178,000 since 1997. This year $27,000 was awarded to Florida residents who are pursuing graduate business degrees at Florida Universities.

The Chapter’s President Sam Hines and Immediate Past Present T. C. Adderly were key program participators. Sam read a thank you note and received the award for the major scholarship winner. T. C. gave the history of the program and was the Master of ceremony. Valerie Pigatt, a South Florida Chapter member, was one of this year’s scholarship winners.

The South Florida Chapter is proud to be the seed that started the program. It is a great please to have two programs in Jacki’s name helping young MBA students achieved their goals in the South Florida community.

South Florida Chapter Career Corner

Panel Discusses Professional Development at South Florida Chapter Meeting

Professional development opportunities, for the purpose of advancing or enhancing one’s career can be found in some atypical as well as typical places. No longer is professional development a matter of attending a workshop or two or obtaining a certification.

Professional development opportunities can be found on the tee box at a golf course or even in a house of worship.  Experiences garnered in places other than a classroom sometimes don’t strike us as being development opportunities, but in fact, make great environments for professional and personal growth by providing more relaxed atmospheres.

A panel of experts recently shared their thoughts on professional development with a group of 40 members and guests of the National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA), South Florida Chapter.  Hosted by JM Family Enterprises, Inc. (JMFE) in Deerfield Beach, Fla., this meeting stimulated over two hours of useful and, at times, entertaining information.  The panel, moderated by Norvel Bethel, Manager, Financial Operations, JM&A Group, a subsidiary of JMFE, consisted of Dianne Hankerson, Vice President, Office of the Chairman at JM Family Enterprises, James K. Hayes, Director for Homeland Security at ADT Security Systems, and Marcia Thornally, Director of Learning and Organization Development, at JM Family Enterprises.  Panelists presented their thoughts and experiences of what professional development is, including mentoring (both formal and informal), project assignments, public speaking, educational endeavors, and self-positioning for consideration as a successor on a company’s succession plan.  One of the opinions shared was that of creating a vision for your career and being prepared to leave a position or company if opportunities are not available in helping you to realize that vision.

Examples of professional and personal development recommendations presented by panelists included:

  • Finding a mentor either through a formal company mentoring program or by approaching someone you respect and admire to spend time talking with you about areas of interest to you and offering recommendations with regard to challenges in your current position.  An emphasis was placed on the fact that you should not necessarily look for a mentor who has the same interests as you do as different backgrounds between you and a mentor can be mutually beneficial.
  • The use of “social” functions as forums for networking (sports, charity events, and faith-based events).
  • Positioning yourself for consideration as a successor by volunteering for challenging projects and obtaining skill sets you don’t currently have (for example, management experience).
  • Obtaining work experience before entering an MBA program (real world experience can make course work more meaningful).
  • Viewing atypical environments as networking opportunities.

South Florida Leaders of Tomorrow Update

by Alison Quick edited by Catherine A. Minnis

This year, the South Florida Chapter sent 16 students and 5 chaperones to the National Black MBA conference in Houston, TX.   In preparation for the trip, students wrote essays on topics such as Brown vs. Board of Education, current events, and role models they encountered in their lives.  In addition, students participated in several pre-conference workshops and fund raising efforts.  Over $5,000 was raised through a raffle, a luncheon, and donations prior to the event and students continue to sell raffle tickets to offset conference costs.  At long last, Joyce Harrigan’s dream was fulfilled as the Leaders attended the conference in style with South Florida Chapter logo shirts provided by JM Family Enterprises.

At the conference, teens in the Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) Program, nationally sponsored by Mars Corporation, attended a series of lectures and workshops focused on this year’s theme:  Re-imagine Education, Employment, & Entrepreneurship.

Day 1 kicked off with keynote motivational speaker, Sporty King.  Sporty grabbed their attention by declaring, “I am ugly, that’s right I am ugly.”   So, what did he mean by he was “ugly” Sporty wanted all of them to know that they have the power to turn the negatives into positives.  So what may be “ugly” to one person is “Uniquely Gifted Lovable You,” to another.

Day 2 of the conference kicked off with motivational speaker, Stedman Graham, letting students know “’they can make it happen and to plan for the future.’  The rest of the day, students attended various seminars, namely “Why to Keep a Journal;'” “’What Students Should Know about Preparing for College;” and “’How to Set Goals.”  Students also attended part of the plenary session with nationally known speaker Les Brown who gave the following advice: “Make ‘No’ your vitamin and be unstoppable.”  Day 2 was capped off with students meeting WNBA star, Cynthia Cooper and attending a WNBA game with the Houston Comets.  Cynthia let the students know you had to “be in it to win it” by working hard, hanging tough, going the distance, and finishing what you started.  She left them with the following food for thought… “Sometimes you got to step out to be who God wants you to be.”

Day 3 began with students attending the conference plenary session with Tavis Smiley, “Tavis Talks.”  Tavis let them know that, “If you lead and no one follows then you are just out for a walk!”  He challenged everyone to “live” in your purpose, work in what you love, have a plan, and leave a legacy.  The rest of the day centered around workshops focusing on such topics as networking, interviewing, and motivation.  In addition, special forums for males/females only covered topics – “Bringing out the best”, self-esteem, and the 5 phases of manhood.  The highlight of this day was the awards program where two South Florida Chapter leaders received scholarships.  CONGRATULATIONS to Andre Brennan, $1,000 winner, and Ransel Castillo, $500 winner.  I don’t know who cheered the loudest - the students, chaperones, or their moms when they heard the news!  What a legacy, South Florida continues to leave behind!

Day 4, students visited Rice University to hear about the academic offerings as well as go on a brief tour of the campus. In the afternoon, the Leaders attended the Houston Space Center.  Saturday was capped off with the end of conference awards banquet and LOT celebration.  During the awards banquet, special recognition was given to Audrey Hines in honor of her retirement from MARS, Inc.  Her commitment and dedication to the LOT program was recognized in a poem created and presented by a group of Leaders (including our very own Andre Brennan and Shameka Thomas) during the banquet.  One thing was clear; Ms. Hines left a tremendous legacy and will be missed by all Sunday marked the students’ arrival back to South Florida but not the end of the conference.  On Saturday, Oct 2nd, students participated in a fund raising luncheon re-capping the conference.  A brief slide show featured pictures from our very own, Catherine Minnis.  Andre and Ransel spoke about what winning the scholarships meant to them followed by some of the Leaders speaking to their experiences.   Special thanks to DeVry University for hosting the event as well as presenting the chapter with a $500 donation!  Our final event linked to the conference is our raffle that will be held at the November networking reception. The Leaders continue to sell tickets towards this event and would welcome your continued support.

Finally, the chaperones would like to say “ Thank you”, to our leaders who attended the conference. The students continued the legacy of excellence by Ms. Harrigan through their representation of the South Florida chapter.

The South Florida Chapter's Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) Youth Program is the number 1 program among 39 chapters nationwide.  We are proud to announce that our Program will be featured in the 2004 conference issue of the MBA Magazine.  This is excellence recognition of the hard work and diligence of not only the high school students involved with our program, but also the LOT Committee headed by Joyce Harrigan.  Joyce and her committee have worked hard to see that our program stays number 1 and give our students the most rewarding experiences of their young lives.

Networking at the Abbey

The August Networking meeting for the South Florida Chapter was held at the Abbey Hotel and Dinning Room located on Miami Beach.  With two hurricanes coming to Florida in 24 hours, most people were concerned about having the event.  “Mother Nature” as always, was good to us. The weather in South Florida was great.  In fact, we had no rain nor wind and our event was held as planned Chapter President Sam Hines introduced Joyce Harrigan and she gave a brief explanation of the Leaders of Tomorrow program and the Chapter’s local efforts and events.  Joyce and Sam also informed the group that the Chapter is taking 20 students and 5 Chaperons to the National Conference in September. Many of the guests were so impressed with Joyce’s information that they gave donations to the program.

Joyce also discussed the details of the Leaders’ raffle that will assist in the cost of sending the students to the national conference.  The cost to send one student to the conference is $1,000. Please contact Joyce Harrigan for your $5 raffle ticket and potential sponsorship ideas or leads.

Missed this Networking event?  Not to worry, we have events planned for September thru December this year.  Please click calendar to see our upcoming events.

South Florida Chapter gives scholarships each year, and then some

Each year since 1987, the South Florida Chapter has awarded scholarships. The scholarship dollars to date total over $80,000.

In 1997, the South Florida Chapter started a trend that has lead to even bigger benefits for South Florida Scholarships students.  In 1997, the Chapter named one of its six scholarships “The Jacki Tuckfield Scholarship” and has continued that scholarship each year since.

The Chapter’s actions lead the parents of Jacki, Dr. Gloria and Dr. Jack Tuckfield to start another scholarship fund in their daughter’s name:  “The Jacki Tuckfield Memorial Graduate Business Scholarship Fund.”

Proudly we share with you that this year (2004) 32 recipients will receive $32,000 from the Jacki Tuckfield Memorial Graduate Business Scholarship Fund (JTMGBSF).

With the inclusion of this year’s recipients, the JTMGBSF will have granted 142 Business Scholarships totaling $151,000 to South Florida residents pursuing graduate business degrees at 10 Florida universities.

The 2004 recipients will be honored at the Seventh Annual JTMGSF Award Program on Tuesday, August 3, 2004, from 7 PM to 9 PM, at the Biscayne Bay Marriott Hotel.

Second Annual Symposium

The South Florida Chapter joined 20 chapters during a 3-day Symposium cruise on Royal Caribbean Cruise Line’s Majesty of the Seas.  We had a much larger group this year.  While 83% of those cruising were new this year, a full 50% of last year’s Symposium attendees returned this year too. The group sailed on Friday May 14, 2004.  The voyage started with an onboard Networking reception in the Viking Crown lounge.  Everyone received a Symposium bag and nametags.

Saturday morning the executive boards of each chapter attended an all day symposium in the ship’s movie theater.  The event started with a leadership seminar, followed by seven best practice workshops. The guests enjoyed the pleasures of a private beach party on the ship’s private island.

Sunday the group divided and enjoyed Nassau, our second port of call.  This year we had more youth in attendance.  One school allowed its students to attend if they returned with a book report of the event.

The Chapter presidents have already started planning next year’s event.  Contact the South Florida Chapter if you have suggested ports of calls.

Angela Gittens speaks at the South Florida Chapter's Networking Reception

Angela Gittens gave a powerful presentation to South Florida MBA's and their guests at the Fontainebleau Hilton Hotel in
Miami on April 9, 2004. First Ms. Gittens joined the group for networking and a business card exchange. Then, she shared with the group some background about the $2.8 billion in projects taking place at Miami International Airport (MIA).

Once her presentation was complete, Gittens fielded some in-depth questions about the size of the budget, operations with the airlines, what it is like working under government policies, the bidding process, new improvements, and future improvements at MIA. We hope she will join our chapter some day.

Golf

Our Eighth Annual Scholarship Golf Classic was a success. Several corporations, including JM Family, City Furniture, Velda Farm, and Pharmed, sponsored golfers in the Classic at Weston Hills Country Club. This is the eighth consecutive year that we have added to our scholarship fund and supported our youth programs with proceeds from the Golf Classic. Look for our Classic in April of each year.  Please join us next year as either a golfer or sponsor.

Many participants took home both a trophy and a raffle prize. This year's prizes included gift certificates, golf balls, head covers, and golf bags.

Proceeds from this year’s Classic bring to over $80,000, the amount raised during the past eight years. This is excellent news for some lucky
South Florida students.
