Our Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT)
youth group participated in a Leadership Seminar. The
Leaders meeting opened with a Seminar on Communications.
Leaders and their chaperons sharpen their communications
skills. This is just one of a serious of seminars and
events planed by the LOT
committee. In addition to their already extensive programs,
the Leaders have added many developmental programs.
Our Leaders have developed their presentation, case
study, leadership development, business management,
program development, and implementation skills.
During the meeting, the Leaders and
chaperons decided how they will help the storm injured
people in the Gulf coast. They reflected on how the
storm affected them and created a bigger impact to the
Gulf coast.
Prays and support are given to the
people injured by the Hurricane. Shared problems will
unite us.

The South Florida Chapter held a
Special Networking Reception at Mercedes-Benz of Pembroke Pines. This was
the last chance to purchase your Mercedes-Benz raffle
ticket.
The event was a good precursor for
our National Conference where one lucky person will
win a Mercedes-Benz. The procedures from Chapter
sales will support our Leaders of Tomorrow Youth Program.
Everyone got a close look at the
latest Mercedes-Benz models while they enjoyed the networking
and refreshments sponsored by Mercedes-Benz of Pembroke Pines. The owner
said he was happy to see so many people attend and it
is his goal to have this year winner pick up their auto
at Mercedes-Benz of Pembroke Pines.

For the eighth year, the South Florida
Chapter participated in the Jacki Tuckfield Memorial Graduate
Business Scholarship Fund. Jacki Tuckfield was
an active Chapter member who lost her life after 25
years.
In 1997, the Chapter named one of
its six scholarships in Jacki’s honor. Jacki’s parents
were so touched by the Chapter’s actions, that they
started a scholarship program in Jacki’s name. The program
has awarded $178,000 since 1997. This year $27,000 was
awarded to Florida
residents who are pursuing graduate business degrees
at Florida Universities.
The Chapter’s President Sam Hines
and Immediate Past Present T.
C. Adderly were key program participators.
Sam read a thank you note and received the award for
the major scholarship winner. T. C. gave the history
of the program and was the Master of ceremony. Valerie
Pigatt, a South Florida Chapter member, was one of this
year’s scholarship winners.
The South Florida Chapter is proud
to be the seed that started the program. It is a great
please to have two programs in Jacki’s name helping
young MBA students achieved their goals in the South Florida
community.

South
Florida Chapter Career Corner
Panel
Discusses Professional Development at South Florida Chapter Meeting
Professional development opportunities, for the purpose of
advancing or enhancing one’s career can be found in
some atypical as well as typical places. No longer is
professional development a matter of attending a workshop
or two or obtaining a certification.
Professional development opportunities can be found on the
tee box at a golf course or even in a house of worship.
Experiences garnered in places other than a classroom
sometimes don’t strike us as being development opportunities,
but in fact, make great environments for professional
and personal growth by providing more relaxed atmospheres.
A panel of experts recently shared their thoughts on professional
development with a group of 40 members and guests of
the National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA), South Florida
Chapter. Hosted by JM Family Enterprises, Inc.
(JMFE) in Deerfield Beach, Fla., this meeting stimulated
over two hours of useful and, at times, entertaining
information. The panel, moderated by Norvel Bethel,
Manager, Financial Operations, JM&A Group, a subsidiary
of JMFE, consisted of Dianne Hankerson, Vice President,
Office of the Chairman at JM Family Enterprises, James
K. Hayes, Director for Homeland Security at ADT Security
Systems, and Marcia Thornally, Director of Learning
and Organization Development, at JM Family Enterprises.
Panelists presented their thoughts and experiences of
what professional development is, including mentoring
(both formal and informal), project assignments, public
speaking, educational endeavors, and self-positioning
for consideration as a successor on a company’s succession
plan. One of the opinions shared was that of creating
a vision for your career and being prepared to leave
a position or company if opportunities are not available
in helping you to realize that vision.
Examples of professional and personal development recommendations
presented by panelists included:
- Finding a mentor either through a formal company
mentoring program or by approaching someone you respect
and admire to spend time talking with you about areas
of interest to you and offering recommendations with
regard to challenges in your current position.
An emphasis was placed on the fact that you should
not necessarily look for a mentor who has the same
interests as you do as different backgrounds between
you and a mentor can be mutually beneficial.
- The use of “social” functions as forums for networking
(sports, charity events, and faith-based events).
- Positioning yourself for consideration as a successor
by volunteering for challenging projects and obtaining
skill sets you don’t currently have (for example,
management experience).
- Obtaining work experience before entering an MBA
program (real world experience can make course work
more meaningful).
- Viewing atypical environments as networking opportunities.

South Florida Leaders of Tomorrow Update
by Alison Quick edited by Catherine
A. Minnis
This year, the South Florida Chapter sent 16 students and 5
chaperones to the National Black MBA conference in Houston, TX. In
preparation for the trip, students wrote essays on topics
such as Brown vs. Board of Education, current events,
and role models they encountered in their lives.
In addition, students participated in several pre-conference
workshops and fund raising efforts. Over $5,000
was raised through a raffle, a luncheon, and donations
prior to the event and students continue to sell raffle
tickets to offset conference costs. At long last,
Joyce Harrigan’s dream was fulfilled
as the Leaders attended the conference in style with
South Florida Chapter logo shirts provided by JM Family
Enterprises.
At the conference, teens in the Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) Program,
nationally sponsored by Mars Corporation, attended a
series of lectures and workshops focused on this year’s
theme: Re-imagine Education, Employment, &
Entrepreneurship.
Day 1 kicked off with keynote motivational speaker, Sporty
King. Sporty grabbed their attention by declaring,
“I am ugly, that’s right I am ugly.” So,
what did he mean by he was “ugly” Sporty wanted all
of them to know that they have the power to turn the
negatives into positives. So what may be “ugly”
to one person is “Uniquely Gifted Lovable You,” to another.
Day 2 of the conference kicked off with motivational speaker,
Stedman Graham, letting students know “’they can make
it happen and to plan for the future.’ The rest
of the day, students attended various seminars, namely
“Why to Keep a Journal;'” “’What Students Should Know
about Preparing for College;” and “’How to Set Goals.”
Students also attended part of the plenary session with
nationally known speaker Les Brown who gave the following
advice: “Make ‘No’ your vitamin and be unstoppable.”
Day 2 was capped off with students meeting WNBA star,
Cynthia Cooper and attending a WNBA game with the Houston
Comets. Cynthia let the students know you had
to “be in it to win it” by working hard, hanging tough,
going the distance, and finishing what you started.
She left them with the following food for thought… “Sometimes
you got to step out to be who God wants you to be.”
Day 3 began with students attending the conference plenary
session with Tavis Smiley, “Tavis Talks.” Tavis
let them know that, “If you lead and no one follows
then you are just out for a walk!” He challenged
everyone to “live” in your purpose, work in what you
love, have a plan, and leave a legacy. The rest
of the day centered around workshops focusing on such
topics as networking, interviewing, and motivation.
In addition, special forums for males/females only covered
topics – “Bringing out the best”, self-esteem, and the
5 phases of manhood. The highlight of this day
was the awards program where two South Florida Chapter
leaders received scholarships. CONGRATULATIONS
to Andre Brennan, $1,000 winner, and Ransel
Castillo, $500 winner. I don’t know who
cheered the loudest - the students, chaperones, or their
moms when they heard the news! What
a legacy, South Florida continues to leave behind!
Day 4, students visited Rice University to hear about the
academic offerings as well as go on a brief tour of
the campus. In the afternoon, the Leaders attended the
Houston Space Center. Saturday
was capped off with the end of conference awards banquet
and LOT celebration.
During the awards banquet, special recognition was given
to Audrey Hines in honor of her retirement from MARS,
Inc. Her commitment and dedication to the LOT program was recognized in a poem created
and presented by a group of Leaders (including our very
own Andre Brennan and Shameka Thomas) during the banquet.
One thing was clear; Ms. Hines left a tremendous legacy
and will be missed by all Sunday marked the students’
arrival back to South Florida but not the end
of the conference. On Saturday, Oct 2nd, students
participated in a fund raising luncheon re-capping the
conference. A brief slide show featured pictures
from our very own, Catherine Minnis. Andre and
Ransel spoke about what winning the scholarships meant
to them followed by some of the Leaders speaking to
their experiences. Special thanks to DeVry University for hosting the event as well as presenting
the chapter with a $500 donation! Our final event
linked to the conference is our raffle that will be
held at the November networking reception. The Leaders
continue to sell tickets towards this event and would
welcome your continued support.
Finally, the chaperones would like to say “ Thank you”, to
our leaders who attended the conference. The students
continued the legacy of excellence by Ms. Harrigan through
their representation of the South Florida chapter.

South Florida Chapter's Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) Youth Program
The South Florida Chapter's Leaders of Tomorrow (LOT) Youth
Program is the number 1 program among 39 chapters nationwide.
We are proud to announce that our Program will be featured
in the 2004 conference issue of the MBA Magazine.
This is excellence recognition of the hard work and
diligence of not only the high school students involved
with our program, but also the LOT Committee headed
by Joyce Harrigan. Joyce and
her committee have worked hard to see that our program
stays number 1 and give our students the most rewarding
experiences of their young lives.
Last year we sent 20 of our students to the national conference
in Philadelphia. At the conference, they solidified
our number 1 ranking by walking off with three (3) awards
and recognition.
We need your support to send our students to the National Conference
in Houston, TX. September 15-19,
2004.
We plan to send 20 students plus 5 chaperones.
We are appealing to members, potential members, and
corporate partners to help us make this happen.
We already have contributions from several members and

Networking at the Abbey
The August Networking meeting for the South Florida Chapter
was held at the Abbey
Hotel and Dinning Room located on Miami Beach. With two
hurricanes coming to Florida in 24 hours, most people were concerned
about having the event. “Mother Nature” as always,
was good to us. The weather in South Florida was great. In fact, we had no rain
nor wind and our event was held as planned Chapter President
Sam Hines introduced Joyce Harrigan and she gave a brief explanation of the
Leaders of Tomorrow program
and the Chapter’s local efforts and events. Joyce
and Sam also informed the group that the Chapter is
taking 20 students and 5 Chaperons to the National Conference
in September. Many of the guests were so impressed with
Joyce’s information that they gave donations to the
program.
Joyce also discussed the details of the Leaders’ raffle that
will assist in the cost of sending the students to the
national conference. The cost to send one student
to the conference is $1,000. Please contact Joyce
Harrigan for your $5 raffle ticket and potential
sponsorship ideas or leads.
Missed this Networking event? Not to worry, we have events
planned for September thru December this year.

The local chapter offers undergraduate and MBA graduate
scholarships annually. Each year we look
for worthy candidates, and welcome information on contacts
in high schools, colleges, and churches – or any other
organization – to help increase the size of our
applicant pool. The scholarship competition for
the 2005/2006 academic year will run from January –
April 2005. We would like a good list of applicant
sources by January 2005.
Mid-year Retreat
Members turned out on July 17, 2004 for a day of networking and brainstorming
at DeVry University in Miramar. Participants learned about the
university and had the opportunity to meet with new
members, the executive committee, and our new national
president.
The South
Florida executive committee shared a summary of the organization's
accomplishments and strategies for the future. Members
also spent time getting to know about our committees
and finding ways to become a more active participant.
The four committees looking for members are Membership
and Networking, Communications, Scholarship, and Leaders
of Tomorrow.
Contact information for any of these committees can

National President Barbara Thomas visits South Florida Chapter
Barbara Thomas, recently installed national president
of the NBMBAA traveled from our Chicago headquarters to address the chapter's membership regarding
the current state of the organization, the vision for
its future and take part in the South Florida Chapter’s
mid-year retreat.
Thomas provided an overview of the national executive
board's strategic plan, which will focus on funding
and leadership. The complete plan will be unveiled at
the national conference in Houston, TX.
She also gave the chapter a sneak preview of the two
road shows the NBMBAA will be sponsoring. More on that

South Florida Chapter
gives scholarships each year, and then some
Each year since 1987, the South Florida
Chapter has awarded scholarships. The scholarship dollars
to date total over $80,000.
In 1997, the South Florida Chapter
started a trend that has lead to even bigger benefits
for South Florida Scholarships students. In 1997,
the Chapter named one of its six scholarships “The Jacki
Tuckfield Scholarship” and has continued that scholarship
each year since.
The Chapter’s actions lead the parents
of Jacki, Dr. Gloria and Dr. Jack Tuckfield to start
another scholarship fund in their daughter’s name:
“The Jacki Tuckfield Memorial Graduate Business Scholarship
Fund.”
Proudly we share with you that this
year (2004) 32 recipients will receive $32,000 from
the Jacki Tuckfield Memorial Graduate Business Scholarship
Fund (JTMGBSF).
With the inclusion of this year’s
recipients, the JTMGBSF will have granted 142 Business Scholarships totaling $151,000 to South Florida residents pursuing
graduate business degrees at 10 Florida universities.
The 2004 recipients will be honored
at the Seventh
Annual JTMGSF Award Program on Tuesday,
August 3, 2004, from 7
PM to 9
PM, at the Biscayne
Bay Marriott Hotel.

Second Annual Symposium
The South Florida Chapter joined 20 chapters during
a 3-day Symposium cruise on Royal Caribbean Cruise Line’s
Majesty of the Seas. We had a much larger group
this year. While 83% of those cruising were new
this year, a full 50% of last year’s Symposium attendees
returned this year too. The group sailed on Friday
May 14, 2004. The voyage
started with an onboard Networking reception in the
Viking Crown lounge. Everyone received a Symposium
bag and nametags.
Saturday morning the executive boards of each chapter
attended an all day symposium in the ship’s movie theater.
The event started with a leadership seminar, followed
by seven best practice workshops. The guests enjoyed
the pleasures of a private beach party on the ship’s
private island.
Sunday the group divided and enjoyed Nassau, our second port
of call. This year we had more youth in attendance.
One school allowed its students to attend if they returned
with a book report of the event.
The Chapter presidents have already started planning
next year’s event. Contact the South Florida Chapter if you have suggested
ports of calls.

Angela Gittens speaks at the South Florida Chapter's Networking
Reception
Angela Gittens gave a powerful presentation to South
Florida MBA's and their guests at the Fontainebleau
Hilton Hotel in Miami on April
9, 2004. First Ms. Gittens
joined the group for networking and a business card
exchange. Then, she shared with the group some background
about the $2.8 billion in projects taking place at Miami
International Airport (MIA).
Once her presentation was complete, Gittens fielded
some in-depth questions about the size of the budget,
operations with the airlines, what it is like working
under government policies, the bidding process, new
improvements, and future improvements at MIA. We hope
she will join our chapter some day.
Golf
Our Eighth Annual Scholarship Golf Classic was a success.
Several corporations, including JM Family, City Furniture,
Velda Farm, and Pharmed, sponsored golfers in the Classic
at Weston Hills Country Club. This is the eighth consecutive
year that we have added to our scholarship fund and
supported our youth programs with proceeds from the
Golf Classic. Look for our Classic in April of each
year. Please join us next year as either a golfer or sponsor.
Many participants took home both a trophy and a raffle
prize. This year's prizes included gift certificates,
golf balls, head covers, and golf bags.
Proceeds from this year’s Classic bring to over $80,000,
the amount raised during the past eight years. This
is excellent news for some lucky South Florida students.
